Wrexham Bowmen Beginners Courses
Here is the information you need to book a beginners course.
Firstly, please don’t email us to ask when the next course is. If there are courses available they will be listed on the right hand side of this page. If no courses are listed or they are full we advise you to follow us on Twitter @wxmbowmen, or our Facebook group as this is how we will release details of new courses and when they are available to book. Or you can just keep checking back on the site.
Please read all of this page before you make a booking.
All attendees on our courses must be fit and healthy.
Juniors must be at least 12.
If you have any physical disabilities you may still be able to attend a course, but please email us rather than booking a place. Emails are checked daily.
Please add the email address: coaching(at)wrexhambowmen.com to your safe senders list or address book to make sure you get our emails after booking the course.
Please remember if the PayPal payment doesn’t complete when you book, that place isn’t booked. If you try a couple of times to book and the payment doesn’t complete, please email us. So we can get you booked on manually. Emails are checked daily.
We run archery beginners courses throughout the year, and these courses are generally on a Saturday or Sunday. The times of these courses will change depending on the time of year, this will also effect if they are held indoors or outside.
Details of the archery beginners courses available can be found on the right or via a link at the bottom of this page, and all courses are booked and paid for in advance. Please don’t just skip to the bottom, but read the whole page to make sure you know what you are booking.
Archery Beginners Course Details
Courses run for three weeks on a Saturday or Sunday
- Sessions: 3
- Session duration: 3hrs
- Equipment: Provided
- Participants: 6-10
- Bow type: Recurve
The archery beginners course is held in the Sports Field or Sports Hall at St Christopher’s School, Stockwell Grove, Wrexham. If you need directions to the school please drop me a line. When you arrive one of the (three) school gates will be open. You may park in the car park, then if you walk towards the school field. There aren’t any facilities for refreshments, but you are more than welcome to bring a flask, drinks, food etc if you wish.
We would recommend comfortable casual clothing, which is not too loose-fitting as this can get in the way. Also, sturdy shoes or trainers are recommended and no open-toed shoes. We also ask that anyone with long hair makes sure they have the means to tie it back – long hair and bowstrings are not a great combination.
The cost of the course is £60 per person for adults £30 for juniors (under 18). No refunds can be given to anyone who drops out during the course.
Anyone not able to complete three consecutive weeks may still be able to reach the required standard. This will be judged on a case-by-case basis during the course.
The Archery Beginners Course Details
The course covers basic archery instruction using Olympic style recurve bows. We can also offer the opportunity to use a some other bow types during the course, once we feel the individual archer has a good enough grasp of the basics.
Our aims for each archer are:
- To familiarise you with the equipment
- To ensure you understand and can shoot within the safety rules
- To get you shooting safely at reasonably short distances of up to 10 yards
- To begin to develop a consistent shooting form and style that you can build on
The aim of the course is to get each archer to a standard allowing him or her to shoot unsupervised as Wrexham Bowmen or any other Archery GB club. We cannot guarantee each archer will reach that standard.
We supply all of the archery equipment you will need for the beginners course – our advice, is however enthusiastic you become (and many do) – try to resist the urge to buy your own equipment straight away. It’s very easy to buy the wrong kit early on and this can be an expensive business.
The usual group size is eight to ten beginners, with at least two instructors (although we nearly always have three or four present). In the first session we will sort out suitable equipment, run through basic safety rules and get you shooting more or less straight away. The majority of the course consists of coaching you in the development of a consistent style – so it really is mostly shooting.
Please note: Junior Archers (under 16) must be accompanied at all times by a parent/guardian or responsible adult nominated by the parent/ guardian. This is to satisfy both insurance and Child Protection requirements.
After the Archery Beginners Course
If you decide you would like to continue with archery after completing the course, you would be very welcome to become a member of Wrexham Bowmen. The costs of archery are relatively inexpensive compared to many sports. Basic costs to be budgeted for would include:
- Membership of Archery GB (the governing body) – this is paid annually and is mandatory in all affiliated clubs as it includes public liability insurance.
- Membership to the Regional bodies the WWA and NWAS
- Membership to Wrexham Bowmen
The membership year runs from October 1st to September 31st. If you join in-between those dates, there is a prorate discount. Memberships are Adult 25+, 18-24 and Junior
And of course a bow, arrows etc. Like any sport you can spend little, or as much as you’ve got! We’re happy to give advice and club members often have really good quality second hand gear available.
It is worth noting that Wrexham Bowmen only currently shoot as a club on a Sunday. Please keep this in mind when considering one of our courses and potentially joining the club.
We hope you’ve found this information helpful and if you’d like to book a place on a course, use the form at the top of the page.
PLEASE NOTE, THE BOOKING FORMS BELOW WILL NOT WORK IN INTERNET EXPLORER (IE). Please use Chrome. Sorry for any inconvenience.
